How the Marlins Pulled Off a June Hot Streak That Had Never Been Done Before

The Miami Marlins just did something no MLB team has ever done. And it’s not just a quirky stat, it’s a full-on turnaround that came out of nowhere.

On May 31, the Marlins were 26-34. Eight games under .500. Fourteen games back in the NL East. Seven games out of a Wild Card spot. They looked like a team already thinking about next year.

Then June happened.

According to MLB.com’s Sarah Langs, the Marlins are the first team in MLB history to enter a calendar month eight or more games below .500 and leave that month six or more games over .500. That’s not a typo. They went from eight games under to six games over in 30 days. Twenty wins, six losses. Swept the Nationals to open June. Won nine of their first ten. Lost only one series all month. Never dropped more than two in a row. And they had three separate winning streaks of four games or more.

The Marlins are now 46-40. They are tied with the Padres and Cardinals for the final NL Wild Card spot. They have the best home record in baseball. And they just swept the Giants.

So how did this happen?

Kyle Stowers and the offense that finally showed up

The bats got hot. Kyle Stowers hit .255 with a .355 on-base percentage, five homers and 23 RBIs. Owen Caissie hit .246 with five homers and 17 RBIs. Joe Mack hit .294 with five homers and 15 RBIs.

But it wasn’t just the lineup. Get this: Sandy Alcantara made six starts in June and went 6-0 with a 3.35 ERA. Max Meyer made five starts and went 4-0 with a 1.78 ERA. John King made ten appearances out of the bullpen, pitched 11 innings with a 0.82 ERA and went 5-0 himself. Pete Fairbanks had six saves. Michael Petersen had eight holds.

That’s not just a hot month. That’s a complete team clicking at the same time.

Can they keep it going?

The Marlins started a four-game set with the Rockies on Wednesday night looking for a third straight win. And for a team that was written off two months ago, they’ve given fans something real to watch in July.

The weird part? Nobody saw this coming. Not even the optimists. But the Marlins are playing like a team that believes in itself now. And in a division with the Braves and Phillies, that matters.
