Rashford’s £325k Wage Is Blocking United’s Next Signing — and the Clock Is Ticking

Manchester United’s summer transfer plans have hit a familiar roadblock: Marcus Rashford’s massive pay packet. According to reports, the club’s ability to bring in a new wide attacker — whether it’s West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville or Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers — depends entirely on shifting the England international on a permanent deal.

This isn’t about want. It’s about math.

Rashford’s wages jumped back up to roughly £325,000 a week after United qualified for the Champions League. For a club trying to balance the books under INEOS’s cost-control regime, that number sits squarely in the middle of every negotiation. Until he’s gone — for good — the checkbook stays half-closed.

The Summerville Situation

Summerville, 24, lit up the World Cup stage with a dazzling performance against Japan, adding to a season where he scored seven Premier League goals and registered five assists — despite West Ham’s relegation. The Dutchman can play across the frontline, even as a striker, and has been labeled “dangerous” by scouts. But West Ham want around £50 million for the former Leeds man. United are balking at that price, and they’re not alone.

According to The Telegraph, the club has not confirmed any formal bid, but sources indicate that no significant offer for a winger will be made unless Rashford is sold first.

Where Can Rashford Go?

That’s the $64 million question. Barcelona had a £26 million buy option on Rashford after loaning him last season, but they chose not to trigger it. Bayern Munich have shown interest but don’t want to match his wages. Selling to a direct Premier League rival is off the table — club leadership is adamant about not strengthening a competitor with an academy product. Turkiye looms as a possibility, specifically Galatasaray, but convincing a 28-year-old England international to move to the Super Lig is no sure thing.

The result? A staring contest between United and every interested party. And Rashford holds the cards.

“It is thought United will only entertain offers to sign Rashford permanently this summer after loaning him to Barcelona last season,” The Telegraph report notes. “But United will need to get the England forward off the books if they are to strengthen in the wide forward position.”

Wild Card: The World Cup

One twist: a big World Cup performance from Rashford could reignite the bidding. If England goes deep and Rashford is a standout, United might actually get more than the £26 million Barcelona passed on. A bidding war between Turkish clubs, maybe even a late entrant from Italy or France, could give INEOS the leverage they need.

For now, though, the ball is in Rashford’s court — and the salary sheet is the referee.
