200 Caps, One Goal: How Messi’s World Cup Hat Trick Changed the Ronaldo Comparison

Lionel Messi didn’t just join Cristiano Ronaldo in the 200-international-cap club on Tuesday. He crashed the party with a hat trick that tied the all-time World Cup scoring record — and rewrote the conversation around two of soccer’s greatest legacies.

Messi, now 38, opened Argentina’s 2026 World Cup campaign against Algeria by drilling a shot from outside the box in the first half. By the final whistle, he had added a second goal on a rebound and then completed his first-ever World Cup hat trick, pulling even with Miroslav Klose for the most goals in tournament history (16). That performance also made Messi the first player to appear in six World Cups and just the second, after Ronaldo, to score in five.

Ronaldo reached the 200-cap milestone back in June 2023, scoring an 89th-minute winner as Portugal beat Iceland 1-0 in a Euro 2024 qualifier. “It’s hard to pick just one” highlight from those first 200 outings, Ronaldo told UEFA at the time. “The Euro 2016, the Nations League, but there are so many beautiful moments.”

The two players followed strikingly similar paths to the milestone — each scoring a decisive goal in their 200th appearance — but the broader stat lines tell slightly different stories.

By the numbers

After 200 international matches, Messi has 134 goals and 58 assists for Argentina. Ronaldo’s Portugal ledger: 134 goals and 30 assists. The goals tally is identical, but Messi’s assist count nearly doubles Ronaldo’s — a reflection of their different roles. Messi has long operated as both creator and finisher for Argentina, while Ronaldo typically plays higher up the pitch, relying on teammates to supply chances.

Both players boast trophy hauls that would be career-defining for anyone else. Ronaldo captained Portugal to the Euro 2016 crown and the 2019 Nations League title. Messi lifted the 2022 World Cup, plus the 2021 and 2024 Copa América trophies.

Messi’s 2026 World Cup hat trick also pushed him past a legendary Brazilian mark. His first goal against Algeria, a rocket from distance, tied Roberto Rivelino for the most goals from outside the box in World Cup history. Messi now has five such goals; Rivelino had five.

The bigger picture

The 200-cap milestone is rare. Only a handful of men’s players have ever reached it, including Ronaldo, Messi, Kuwait’s Bader Al-Mutawa, Malaysia’s Soh Chin Ann, and Saudi Arabia’s Mohamed Al-Deayea. But the way each player got there — and what they’ve done at those World Cups and continental tournaments — is what separates legends from icons.

Messi’s hat trick in his 200th cap, on the sport’s biggest stage, may be the exclamation point on a rivalry that has defined a generation. Ronaldo’s moment came in a qualifier against Iceland, dramatic but ultimately one match in a long campaign. Both are historic. Only one happened at a World Cup.
