Manchester United have zeroed in on West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes and they’re not backing off. According to journalist Shaun Connolly, the club is confident they can get this done even if it takes the entire transfer window. That kind of patience from a team that usually panic-buys a center-back on deadline day is worth noting.
Fernandes is 21 years old and already looks like he belongs in the Premier League. He made 36 league appearances for West Ham last season, scoring three times and adding four assists. The numbers don’t jump off the page but anyone who watched him regularly knows he does the stuff that doesn’t show up on the scoresheet. He tackles well, reads danger early, and recovers possession in his own half without committing stupid fouls. He can also clear it when the pressure comes which is something United’s midfield has struggled with for years.
Offensively he’s got a long-range shot that keeps goalkeepers honest and he picks out passes in the final third that create chances. He’s primarily a box-to-box midfielder but he can sit deeper or push up as a number ten. That versatility is probably what Michael Carrick likes most. Carrick’s midfield needs energy and Fernandes brings that in spades. He also knows the league already so there’s no adjustment period where he looks lost for three months.
The Contract Situation Complicates Things
Fernandes signed a deal that runs through 2030. West Ham doesn’t have to sell and they’re not going to give him away. United will have to meet the Hammers’ valuation or walk away. The fact that United brass is saying they’ll wait suggests they think West Ham’s price will come down as the window drags on. That’s a gamble but it beats overpaying on August 1st like they usually do.
For Carrick this makes a ton of sense. He’s building a midfield that can actually run for 90 minutes and Fernandes fits that profile. At 21 he’s not a finished product but that’s the point. United would be buying his prime years not paying top dollar for someone who’s already peaked. Whether West Ham actually lets him go remains to be seen but the confidence coming out of Old Trafford is real. If this drags into late August don’t be surprised if United finally get their guy.
