One Insider Suggests Brandon Aiyuk Might Never Play Again, and His Own Words Aren’t Helping

Brandon Aiyuk went on his YouTube channel this week and essentially torched whatever bridge was still standing between him and the 49ers. He said he doesn’t mess with the organization. He said he’ll never be cool with them. He said the only time he’ll step back in that building is on October 19th, when he comes through wearing a different jersey with a belt around his waist.

It was a lot. And it prompted David Lombardi of The SF Standard to wonder out loud whether Aiyuk’s NFL career is actually done.

Lombardi posted on X that if you watch what Aiyuk does instead of listening to what he says, the writing has been on the wall for months. He pointed out that if the 49ers win the right to claw back money from Aiyuk’s contract, it might not even make financial sense for the receiver to keep playing. Any future earnings could be offset and sent straight to San Francisco.

The contract dispute that broke everything

The tension between Aiyuk and the 49ers didn’t just appear out of nowhere. After Aiyuk tore his ACL, MCL and meniscus during the 2024 season, the team voided the remaining guaranteed money on his contract. Their reasoning? He didn’t participate in team-directed rehab. Aiyuk eventually stopped reporting to the facility entirely and was placed on the reserve/left squad list.

In his video, Aiyuk claimed a team executive showed up at his house uninvited after a disagreement involving a coach. He said that moment permanently damaged the relationship. He didn’t name names, but the implication was clear: trust is gone on both sides.

Aiyuk wants out. But where?

Aiyuk has publicly said he wants to play for the Washington Commanders. The problem is he’s still under contract with San Francisco. And the 49ers aren’t exactly known for handing out favors to players who air grievances on YouTube. So right now, it’s a standoff with no obvious off-ramp.

Lombardi’s point about the money is worth taking seriously. If the 49ers successfully argue that Aiyuk breached his contract by refusing rehab and then skipping town, they could go after his future earnings. That means even if another team signs him, a chunk of that paycheck might go straight back to Santa Clara. It’s a worst-case scenario for a player who just spent an entire season recovering from major knee surgery.

Aiyuk is talented. When healthy, he’s a difference-maker. But he’s coming off a brutal injury, he’s publicly torched his current employer, and the financial situation is a mess. Teams that might have been interested could decide the headache isn’t worth it. Or they could wait and see if the 49ers eventually cut bait just to move on.

Either way, this isn’t a normal contract dispute. It’s turned personal, it’s turned public, and it might end with a talented receiver on the outside looking in.
