Brandon Aiyuk wants out of Pittsburgh. Badly. But two of the most respected defensive players in Steelers history are not here for how he’s going about it.
Joe Haden and James Harrison went on the Deebo & Joe podcast this week and let loose on the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver who has been making noise about forcing a trade to the Washington Commanders. Neither guy held back.
Harrison was blunt. He questioned whether Aiyuk understands the damage he’s doing to his own reputation. “I do not think that he understands the ramifications of what he’s doing,” Harrison said. “And I don’t even know, I hate to say it, if he’ll have a chance to make up from this if he doesn’t stop. There’s nobody that is going to take a chance on that, man. You are ruining your whole possibility of continuing your career.”
Haden kept it just as real. “It’s one second to tear down 10 years of credibility,” he said. The two former Steelers even titled their latest YouTube video ‘This Man is Wylin!’ — a clear shot at Aiyuk’s public campaign.
For context, Aiyuk has spent the past few weeks airing his frustrations on social media. He’s made it clear he wants to play for Washington, whether that comes through a trade or by getting released and signing as a free agent. The Steelers took a chance on him after a massive knee injury cost him the entire 2025 season. Now he’s openly telling them he doesn’t want to be there.
And that’s the part that seems to bother Haden and Harrison most. Aiyuk was an elite receiver before the injury. He was a key piece for the 49ers. But he hasn’t played a snap since 2024. No one knows what he’ll look like when he gets back on the field. And instead of focusing on his rehab or keeping a low profile, he’s out here burning bridges in real time.
Harrison has never been one to sugarcoat anything. He built a career on being brutally honest and relentless. So hearing him call out a younger player for bad judgment? That carries weight in Pittsburgh. Haden, who spent years as a respected leader in that locker room, backing him up makes it even tougher to ignore.
The Steelers have had a busy offseason — new head coach Mike McCarthy, Aaron Rodgers coming in for one more ride, and a roster that thinks it can make a real playoff push. They don’t need the distraction. And they definitely don’t need a player who doesn’t want to be there while he’s still trying to prove he can even play again.
Aiyuk might have felt like he was taking control of his future. But the way Haden and Harrison see it, he’s just making things worse for himself.
