OKC Locks In Lu Dort at $17.7 Million as Roster Moves Begin

The Oklahoma City Thunder made a straightforward call on Lu Dort’s contract Monday, picking up his $17.7 million team option for the 2026-27 season. That’s a decent chunk of change for a guy who started 67 games last year and plays defense like he’s trying to break something.

The deadline for teams to decide on options is Monday, and free agency opens Tuesday. The Thunder had a decision to make on Dort, and they chose to keep him around. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the organization informed the 27-year-old guard they’re bringing him back.

Dort isn’t the flashiest player on the roster. That’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s job. But Dort’s role as a physical perimeter defender and a guy who can knock down catch-and-shoot threes has been quietly valuable for OKC. He shot 39.3% from deep last season, which makes his contract feel less like a luxury and more like fair value.

What’s interesting is the timing. The Thunder have a roster full of young talent and first-round picks stashed away. They’re in a position where they can be patient or aggressive this summer. Keeping Dort suggests they see him as part of the core, not just a trade chip.

There’s also the question of what happens next. Oklahoma City has flexibility under the salary cap. They could make a run at another piece in free agency or stand pat and trust internal development. Picking up Dort’s option doesn’t lock them into anything drastic, but it signals they’re not looking to blow things up.

Dort came into the league as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State and carved out a real career. That’s a long way from where he started. Now he’s got another year guaranteed at nearly $18 million. Not bad for a guy who wasn’t supposed to be here.

Free agency officially starts Tuesday. Expect more Thunder moves in the coming days — maybe something bigger, maybe not. But this one’s off the board.
