Newcastle Want Felix Nmecha. That £73.5 Million Release Clause Is a Problem.

Felix Nmecha is having a hell of a World Cup right now in North America. The Borussia Dortmund midfielder is playing well for Germany, and that’s got Premier League clubs circling like sharks. Newcastle United is the latest to join the hunt.

According to Sky Germany’s Keith Downie, the Magpies are officially “considering” a move for the 25-year-old. And here’s where it gets interesting: Eddie Howe has apparently been a fan of Nmecha for years. Back in the summer of 2023, Newcastle nearly signed him but ended up going with Sandro Tonali instead. That decision aged in some interesting ways, given Tonali’s gambling suspension last season.

But there’s a catch. A big one.

Nmecha’s contract with Dortmund runs through 2030, and it includes an €85 million release clause. That’s roughly £73.5 million in real money. And Newcastle, under their current ownership model, doesn’t exactly love paying release clauses in full. They’d prefer to negotiate something lower, maybe structure the deal differently. But Dortmund doesn’t have much incentive to budge here. Nmecha’s been productive, he’s young enough, and his stock is rising with every game in the tournament.

Downie put it bluntly on X: “The clause is the issue for Newcastle. Dortmund would need to be willing to lower their asking price below the £73.5m buy-out clause. And only then would consider making a move. They won’t, and aren’t, at £73.5m.”

So unless Dortmund suddenly gets generous, this one looks dead in the water.

What This Means for the Midfield Merry-Go-Round

Nmecha wouldn’t just be a random pickup for Newcastle. He could be a direct replacement if either Tonali or Bruno Guimaraes leaves this summer. And both of those guys have been linked with Arsenal, according to BBC Sport. So there’s a real chance Newcastle loses one of its midfield anchors and needs to bring someone in. Nmecha fits that profile — he’s box-to-box, comfortable on the ball, and he’s got international experience.

But Manchester United is also in the mix. The club’s recruitment chief Christopher Vivell has already been in contact with Nmecha’s representatives, per Sky Germany. United can offer Champions League football, which is a pretty big selling point. Though Newcastle’s project has its own appeal, especially if Nmecha walks into a guaranteed starting role because Tonali or Guimaraes is gone.

So we’ve got a three-way chess game here. Dortmund holds the pieces. Newcastle wants to play but doesn’t want to pay full price. United might be willing to spend more. And Nmecha has to decide what matters most: money, minutes, or the chance to play in Europe’s top competition.

For now, it’s all speculation. But with the World Cup still going and the summer transfer window about to heat up, this one’s got legs.
