Newcastle Slaps £100M Price Tag on Tonali — Who’s Willing to Pay?

Sandro Tonali’s situation at Newcastle United has reached a boiling point. The Italian midfielder wants out after just two seasons on Tyneside, and according to multiple reports, the club is ready to cash in — but only at a steep price. The asking price? A staggering £100 million.

Newcastle secured Tonali from AC Milan for roughly £61 million in 2023, and they are reportedly determined to turn a hefty profit. The Magpies have made it clear: no offer under nine figures will get the conversation started.

The timing is telling. Newcastle finished in the bottom half of the Premier League table last season, missing out on Champions League football entirely. That reality has reportedly pushed Tonali to seek a move, with a growing list of suitors circling.

The Bidding War That Hasn’t Happened Yet — But Could

Tonali has been offered to Arsenal and Manchester United, according to sources close to the situation. Tottenham Hotspur, under new manager Roberto De Zerbi, are also exploring a move — though Spurs have yet to formally contact Newcastle. Instead, their camp has held discussions with the player’s representatives.

De Zerbi, who coached Tonali at Brescia earlier in his career, is said to be driving Tottenham’s interest. But any deal would require significant financial firepower, and that price tag is a major hurdle. The club has not commented publicly on the negotiations.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has been effusive in his praise for Tonali, once describing how he fell “in love” watching the 26-year-old on the pitch. That admiration hasn’t stopped the inevitable speculation from snowballing.

Contract and Performance Context

Tonali isn’t going anywhere cheaply — or quickly. He signed a contract extension earlier this year that runs through 2029, with an option for an additional season. That long-term deal gives Newcastle leverage, even as the player angles for an exit.

Last season, Tonali appeared in 53 matches across all competitions, contributing three goals and seven assists. Solid numbers, but not the kind that typically command a £100 million fee. The price tag reflects Newcastle’s desire to recoup and then some, not necessarily his current market value.

The Magpies have already begun their summer exodus. Anthony Gordon was sold to Barcelona earlier this window. Now, Tonali could follow him out the door, with Joe Willock and Valentino Livramento also attracting interest from other clubs.

What’s at Stake for Newcastle

For Newcastle, this is more than just a transfer saga. Tonali is still considered a key piece of the team’s core, but the club’s inability to offer Champions League football has weakened their hand. If the Magpies want to rebuild and compete next season, they’ll need to reinvest any windfall wisely.

For Tonali, the message is clear: he wants to play at the highest level. Whether Arsenal, United, or Tottenham can meet Newcastle’s demands — and his ambitions — remains to be seen.
