Red Sox Just Did Something They Haven’t Done in 9 Years. It Barely Matters.

The Boston Red Sox rotation just strung together eight straight quality starts for the first time since 2015. That’s the kind of statistic that normally means a team is rolling. But look at the record over those eight games and the good vibes evaporate fast.

Boston went 4-4. That’s not a typo. The starters did their job, often going deep into games while holding opponents down, and the team still split the stretch like a .500 squad that can’t get out of its own way.

Thursday night’s 6-3 win over the Yankees offered a brief reprieve. But that game also showed the split personality this roster has developed. The offense put up enough runs to win, which hasn’t been a given. The bullpen didn’t implode, which also hasn’t been a given. It just hasn’t been consistent enough from either group to build any real momentum.

Why the Rotation’s Hot Streak Isn’t Changing Anything

The rotation was supposed to be the strength of this team coming into the season. Boston added Sonny Gray and Ranger Suarez to a group that already had some interesting pieces. On paper it looked like real depth, maybe even a staff that could carry the club through rough patches.

And for these last eight games, that’s basically what happened. But here’s the thing: when a team goes 4-4 during a stretch where the starters are dealing like that, it tells you the other parts aren’t working. The lineup has gone quiet in too many spots. The bullpen has coughed up leads. One strong week from the pitchers only highlights how much else is broken.

Boston is 33-46. Dead last in the AL East. Those aren’t numbers that suggest a turnaround is coming. They’re numbers that suggest the front office will be getting a lot of calls about available players before the trade deadline.

Could the Red Sox flip this? Sure, baseball is weird and July can change a lot. But a 4-4 record with eight straight quality starts is basically the baseball equivalent of a warning sign. If your best isn’t good enough to win more than half your games, there’s not a lot left to lean on.

The Red Sox get another shot at the Yankees on Friday night at Fenway. First pitch is at 7:10 PM EST. The starters might deliver again. Whether it matters is a different question entirely.
