Morgan Rogers Gets the Nod for England in a Rare Start This Summer

England is shaking things up ahead of their quarterfinal clash with Argentina, and the biggest piece of news came out of the camp early Tuesday. Morgan Rogers is expected to start for just the second time this tournament.

The midfielder has been a fringe figure for most of the summer, mostly watching from the bench while the established names carried the load. But now, with the stakes at their highest, manager Gareth Southgate is turning to a guy who has barely played. That says something.

Why Rogers Now?

Some of it might be tactical. Argentina will look to overload the midfield, and Rogers offers a different kind of energy than the usual starters. He’s direct, he’s physical, and he isn’t afraid to run at defenders. England’s buildup play has looked stale in patches this summer, and maybe Southgate wants a spark more than he wants control.

But you also have to wonder if this is a response to injury or fitness concerns somewhere else in the squad. The team hasn’t confirmed anything on that front, but the timing is interesting. Rogers got his first start way back in the group stage against Slovenia, and that was a dead rubber. This is not that. This is win-or-go-home.

OneFootball’s Padraig Whelan first reported the news, and the reaction from England fans online has been split. Some love the boldness. Others are asking why a player with so few minutes is being thrown into a tie this big. Both sides have a point.

What It Means for England’s Chances

Argentina is the team nobody wants to face right now. They’re deep, they’re confident, and Lionel Messi is still doing ridiculous things at 39 years old. England can’t afford to be passive. They need to disrupt Argentina’s rhythm early, and Rogers might be the guy to do it.

If he can force a mistake or create a chance in the first 20 minutes, this could look like a genius move. If he gets swallowed up by Argentina’s midfield and England goes down a goal early, the second-guessing will be loud and relentless. That’s just how it goes.

The lineup isn’t official yet, but the word from inside the camp is clear: Rogers is in. What he does with the opportunity is on him.
