LeBron James has told the Lakers he’s not playing for them in 2026-27. That much is out in the open now. What happens next is where the NBA rumor mill gets interesting.
The usual suspects are already circling. The Warriors make sense. The Cavaliers are the emotional hometown pick. The Heat have the Miami mystique and Pat Riley’s track record. All three have been connected to James in one way or another. But here’s the pitch that might sound crazy until you think about it for a minute: the Minnesota Timberwolves.
According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Timberwolves are known to have interest in LeBron. Which sounds like a weird fit on the surface. But dig into it and it starts to click.
Why Minnesota Makes More Sense Than You Think
The Wolves already have Anthony Edwards, who is basically LeBron-level arrogant in the best way. They just added LaMelo Ball in what was a headline-grabbing acquisition. Put LeBron in that mix and you’ve got a backcourt and wing rotation that can hang with anyone. Edwards doesn’t need the ball in his hands every second. Ball is a distributor who makes everyone around him better. LeBron is still LeBron, even at 41.
There’s also the Chris Finch factor. Minnesota’s coach runs a system that lets playmakers cook. That’s LeBron’s whole deal at this stage of his career. He doesn’t want to be in a rigid offense where he’s standing in a corner. He wants to orchestrate. The Timberwolves would let him do that.
The Other Three Horses in This Race
Golden State remains the speculative favorite if you poll fans on Twitter. But there’s actually some smoke around that one being dead in the water. The Warriors wanted Anthony Davis at one point and that didn’t happen. Teams shift priorities fast.
Cleveland is always going to be the nostalgic pick. LeBron coming back to retire where it all started. Nice story. But does that roster win a title right now? Maybe. Probably not without some major retooling.
Miami is the dark horse everyone treats like a favorite. Heat Culture, the beach, Jimmy Butler vibes. But Miami doesn’t have the cap space or trade assets to make it easy. Riley would have to get creative.
Amick put it bluntly in his column: “What’s more, the Warriors do not appear to have clarity yet regarding James’ plans. Cleveland and Miami are often cited as realistic landing spots as well, and the Minnesota Timberwolves are known to have interest if he felt like shocking the basketball world with that sort of move.”
LeBron has spent his whole career surprising people. Going to Minnesota would be the biggest surprise yet. It’s not the obvious choice. It’s not the sentimental choice. But it’s the kind of chaotic move that feels like him.
The Wolves would have to clear cap space and make it work financially. That’s not a small hurdle. But if LeBron wants one more ring and wants to do it somewhere nobody saw coming, Minnesota is sitting right there waiting.
