Ethan Wheatley spent the second half of last season at Bradford City and didn’t score a single goal in 12 appearances. Now he’s in talks with a Dutch club that just got promoted. That tells you a lot about how Manchester United sees him.
According to Football Insider’s Peter O’Rourke, the 20-year-old forward has already held discussions with SC Cambuur about a potential loan move. Cambuur will be playing in the Eredivisie next year after earning promotion, and they want Wheatley as part of their attack.
The kid is clearly not done developing. United believes that. They just don’t think that development is happening in England right now.
A Strange Season for Wheatley
Wheatley started the 2025-26 campaign on loan at Northampton Town, where things took a while to click. Once they did, manager Kevin Nolan basically built the attack around him. United noticed. And then they pulled him out in January anyway.
Nolan wasn’t quiet about being pissed off either. He made it known publicly that he thought Wheatley should have stayed. United’s reasoning was pretty simple: they felt the loan was successful in terms of adaptation, but they wanted a different environment for the next step.
That next step was Bradford City. It did not go well. Wheatley played 12 games, scored zero goals, and didn’t even make the squad for Bradford’s League One playoff semifinal against Bolton. That’s a tough look for any young striker.
Why Cambuur Makes Sense
Peter O’Rourke reported on X that Wheatley is specifically looking for a development loan in Europe. Cambuur is reportedly keen to persuade him to pick them over other options.
There was already interest from Schalke, who will be in the Bundesliga next season after getting promoted. United turned that down for a permanent sale but left the door open for another loan. So Cambuur isn’t the only option, but they might be the most interesting one.
The Eredivisie has a pretty solid track record with young English forwards. The pace is a step up from League One but the tactical environment is often more forgiving for attackers. It’s not a shock that United would rather see him there than fighting for scraps in another League One relegation battle.
Wheatley’s contract runs through 2028 at Old Trafford, so there’s no immediate pressure to sell. United can afford to be patient. But they need to pick the right loan. Sending him to Bradford clearly didn’t work. Another miss could slow his progress at a time when the club needs to figure out which young forwards are actually part of the long-term plan.
Cambuur wants him. Wheatley wants to go. Now it’s up to United to decide if the Dutch top flight is the right place to fix what went wrong in England.
