Milwaukee Says Goodbye to Giannis With a Classy Move Most Teams Wouldn’t Make

The Milwaukee Bucks officially traded Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat on Monday, and instead of posting a generic press release, the franchise did something that actually felt human. They thanked his family.

Not for the MVP trophies, though those are nice. Not for the championship in 2021, though that matters too. The Bucks specifically thanked the Antetokounmpos for what they did off the court in Milwaukee over 13 years. And honestly, that kind of message is rare when a superstar forces his way out.

“To the Antetokounmpo family, thank you for everything you’ve done for this city,” the organization wrote. “Thank you for making Milwaukee home and truly pouring back into the community. Your legacy extends far beyond the basketball court with all the love you’ve shown. Milwaukee is a better place because of the Antetokounmpos.”

It’s a line a lot of teams would say publicly while privately steaming. But if you’ve followed Giannis in Milwaukee, you know it’s not empty. The guy ran free basketball camps, funded local youth programs, and his mother Veronica was a visible presence in the city’s Greek community. The Bucks didn’t have to post this. They chose to.

The numbers tell part of the story

Giannis leaves Milwaukee with 895 games played for the Bucks, 830 of them starts. He averaged 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks on 55.4 percent shooting from the floor and a rough 28.5 percent from three. He won Most Improved Player in 2016, two MVPs in 2018 and 2019, and a Defensive Player of the Year in 2019. The championship run in the bubble year was the crowning moment.

But the man is 31 now. And the rumors had been circling for most of last season. By the time Monday rolled around, it felt less like a shock and more like the final step in a long goodbye.

Bobby Portis is also headed to Miami in the same deal. The Bucks sent out a separate farewell to him, which is exactly the kind of small gesture that makes you wonder why more teams don’t handle exits like this.

Milwaukee’s roster is going to look wildly different next season. The Bucks have essentially started over. And while fans are nervous about what that means on the court, at least the front office showed some grace on the way out the door. That matters more than most people want to admit.
