The 2026 MLB All-Star Game is coming to Citizens Bank Park, and the American League is sending a familiar face to the plate first. Mike Trout will lead off for the AL on Tuesday night. It’s his 12th career All-Star appearance, but this one hits different.
Trout grew up about 40 miles south of Philadelphia in Millville, New Jersey. He’s a die-hard Philly sports guy — you’ve seen him wearing Eagles gear, pulling for the 76ers, living that South Jersey life that basically makes him an honorary Philadelphian. So leading off in this game is kind of a full-circle moment, even if he’s wearing an Angels jersey instead of a Phillies one.
The AL lineup has some interesting names around him. Yordan Alvarez slots in at DH. Shea Langeliers behind the plate. Junior Caminero at third. Bobby Witt Jr. at shortstop. Cody Bellinger in right. Ben Rice at first. Riley Greene in left. Ernie Clement at second. Dylan Cease on the mound.
Trout is the only Angels representative at the break this year, which tells you something about where that team is right now. But individually, he’s been solid coming off that right hamstring strain he dealt with in late spring. He returned in early June and has been ramping up ever since. His batting average sits at .237, which is low by his standards. But that OBP of .390 is still elite. 18 home runs, 39 RBIs, 67 hits. Not bad for a guy who missed time and is basically using this All-Star Game as a midseason checkpoint.
There’s something almost poetic about Trout getting this honor in a ballpark where he probably dreamed of playing as a kid. He’s never been shy about his fandom. Dude grew up an Eagles fan. He’s been spotted at Phillies games during the offseason. Now he gets to step into the box first in front of a crowd that already loves him, just wearing a different uniform.
The All-Star Game starts at 8 p.m. EST on July 14. First pitch, Trout vs. whatever starter the NL throws out there. Should be fun.
