Jesus Luzardo Couldn’t Say No to His First All-Star Game. Here’s Why.

Jesus Luzardo was honest about it. A few days off sounded great. A beach, maybe. Some quiet. But when you’re a first-time All-Star and the game is in your home ballpark, the decision basically makes itself.

“I don’t think I could ever turn that down,” Luzardo told SPORTSRADIO 94WIP on Monday. “I’d be lying to you if I said a couple days off sound great. But for me in my situation, first time, in Philly, I don’t think it was ever an option for me to turn down.”

The Phillies are hosting the 2026 All-Star Game, and Luzardo is one of six team reps in the National League lineup. That’s a big deal for a guy who didn’t grow up assuming he’d get this moment. He’s 28 years old, in his second season with Philadelphia, and he’s been carving up lineups all year. A 3.51 ERA across 19 starts. A 136-to-35 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Those are legit ace numbers.

No Regrets, Even If It’s Not a Real Game

The All-Star Game isn’t exactly playoff intensity. Luzardo knows that. “It’s not the same intensity. It’s not the regular season. We’re still having a good time,” he said. He gets why guys sometimes tap out, cite fatigue, go reset. But this was different. This was a home crowd, a first invitation, a chance to soak it in.

The Phillies stumbled out of the gate this season. They were sluggish, inconsistent, the kind of start that gets managers fired and fans screaming into talk radio microphones. But they steadied themselves. They went into the break at 54-43, fresh off a series win over the Tigers in Detroit. That’s two games behind the Braves in the NL East. Within striking distance.

Luzardo’s Second Half Could Define the Phillies

Luzardo’s been a big reason for that rebound. Lefties who throw hard and miss bats aren’t easy to find. He’s been reliable, durable, the kind of starter you feel good about handing the ball to in a big spot. The Phillies will need that down the stretch. The Braves aren’t going away. The Mets are lurking. Every game counts.

For now though, Luzardo gets to stand on the mound at Citizens Bank Park wearing an All-Star jersey. He earned it. And he didn’t skip it. Sometimes that’s the whole story.
