Mike Conley Jr. is officially a Celtic. And this time, that Minnesota goodbye is for real.

The 38-year-old point guard inked a one-year deal with Boston in free agency. It adds another line to an already decorated career. But before he packed up for Beantown, Conley made sure to leave something behind for the place that gave him four solid years.

He posted a thank you on X. A photo of himself in a Timberwolves jersey, the Target Center crowd blurred behind him. The caption was simple: “An incredible run! Thank you to the @Timberwolves organization, team, and fans for embracing me and my family, and making Minneapolis feel like home.”

Fans flooded the replies. One person wrote, “The pleasure was ours, Mike.” Another called him a class act. Somebody else said his “Bite Bite” threes always got them hyped. A fan named Kinsey summed it up pretty well: “Big love for you, Mr. Conley! Best of luck to your future!”

The trade that wasn’t really a goodbye

Here’s the weird part. Back in February, Conley was shipped to Chicago in a three-team deal that also included Detroit. Then the Bulls moved him to Charlotte. The Hornets waived him. And within days, he was back in Minnesota on a short-term deal. That reunion, it turns out, was just a pit stop.

Now he’s in Boston. And the Timberwolves have to move on without the guy who helped stabilize their entire operation.

Conley wasn’t putting up huge numbers by the end. That wasn’t his job. He was the steady hand, the guy who got Anthony Edwards to slow down and think. Edwards came into the league raw, electric but erratic. Conley took him under his wing, helped him become the two-way star Minnesota needed him to be. You can track Edwards’ jump in decision-making directly to Conley’s presence in the locker room.

Minnesota went from a young, messy team to a legitimate Western Conference contender with Conley running the show. He didn’t do it with flash. He did it with pocket passes, defensive positioning, and a quiet calm that kept everybody from panicking in big moments.

Twenty seasons is rare company

With this Boston deal, Conley becomes just the 14th player in NBA history to reach 20 seasons. That list includes LeBron, Kareem, Kobe, Duncan, Garnett. The guys who lasted because they were elite, or because they took care of their bodies, or because the game just refused to let them go. Conley earned it. He has the work ethic. He has the character. And he has the respect of everyone who ever shared a floor with him.

Minnesota fans will miss him. They made that clear in the replies. One guy wrote, “You helped bring this franchise to the next level. You will always have love here. Good luck in Boston.” Another said, “You will always be Minnesota Mike to us.”

Now Minnesota Mike is a Celtic. And the Timberwolves have some big shoes to fill. Not just at point guard, but in the soul of the team.
