Miguel Vargas is headed to his first All-Star Game. So is Andy Pages. And the fact that they’re going together means more to Vargas than any stat line ever could.

The former Dodgers infielder got real about what this moment means, and it’s not about the numbers. It’s about the guy standing next to him.

“My mom loves Andy as her son,” Vargas said. “We played all Minor League together, he was my roommate in Triple-A.”

Vargas and Pages came up through the Dodgers system side by side. They shared hotel rooms on road trips. They ate bad fast food after long bus rides. They watched each other grind through slumps and celebrate small wins in front of crowds that barely filled the seats. That kind of thing doesn’t disappear when you make the big leagues.

“It means a lot for me, he’s my brother,” Vargas said.

More than just a clubhouse connection

This isn’t your typical “we’re teammates” quote. Vargas isn’t with the Dodgers anymore — he’s now with the Chicago White Sox after being traded. Pages is still in LA, having broken through this season as one of the team’s brighter young outfielders. But the friendship didn’t end when the trade went through. If anything, it’s the reason this All-Star nod feels different.

For Pages, the selection is a breakthrough. He’s been raking all year, playing solid defense, and proving he belongs. For Vargas, it’s a little bit of everything — a validation after some rough stretches, a payoff for all those years grinding in places like Oklahoma City and Tulsa, and a chance to share a spotlight with the guy who was there for all of it.

Think about how many minor league roommates never make it to an All-Star Game together. Most don’t make it at all. These two did, and they’ll walk into that clubhouse in the same stadium at the same time, knowing exactly what the other guy went through to get there.

Baseball fans love a good storyline. This one is pretty simple: two kids who came up together, stuck together, and now get to be All-Stars together. The sport can get complicated with all the numbers and analytics and trade rumors. But this is the human part. The part that still matters.
