Messi’s Penalty Miss Hands Egypt a Shock 2-0 Lead Over Argentina in World Cup Knockout

ATLANTA — The World Cup Round of 16 just flipped on its head. Egypt, the clear underdog against reigning champion Argentina, took a 2-0 lead inside 70 minutes Tuesday night, and the football world is still processing what it just watched.

It started with Yasser Ibrahim. In the 15th minute, he got on the end of a set piece and powered a header past the Argentine keeper. The stadium erupted. But nobody expected what happened next.

Five minutes later, Argentina got a penalty. Lionel Messi stepped up, the moment everyone expected him to calm the game down. Except he didn’t. Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir dove left and saved it cleanly, springing a roar that drowned out the pro-Messi crowd. That miss carried a rough stat: Messi became the first player in World Cup history to miss two penalties in his career.

The save seemed to shake Argentina more than Egypt. The Pharaohs didn’t just hold the lead. They started believing they could actually do this. And then in the 67th minute, Mostafa Ziko made it 2-0 with a sharp finish that snuck past the keeper and inside the far post. Argentina, the team that came in as the World Cup favorite, was suddenly on the verge of a first-round exit.

Before the second goal, there was a VAR controversy that briefly tested Egypt’s composure. The officials reviewed a potential foul in the box, and the delay stretched long enough to make fans nervous. But the call went Egypt’s way, and instead of getting rattled, they doubled down. Defensively they packed the middle, dared Argentina to break them down, and kept coming up with the ball.

Argentina had chances. Messi curled a free kick just over the bar. Julian Alvarez had a header saved on the line. But nothing got past Shobeir again. The Egyptian defense held its shape while Argentina grew increasingly frantic, playing long balls into a backline that never cracked.

It’s far from over — there’s still time left and Argentina has pulled off late rescues before — but right now, the defending champions are on the ropes. Egypt needs to hold on for roughly 20 more minutes to pull off the biggest upset of this tournament. With Messi on the field, you can’t count Argentina out completely. But Egypt just made a statement that nobody saw coming.
