Mateus Fernandes Hasn’t Picked a Club Yet. Manchester United and Spurs Are Both Waiting.

Mateus Fernandes is still a free agent in all but name. The 21-year-old West Ham midfielder is sitting on offers from at least two Premier League clubs, and he hasn’t told anyone which one he prefers. According to journalist Ben Jacobs, both Manchester United and Tottenham are in active talks with the player. Neither has heard back.

Jacobs said on talkSPORT that United’s conversations with Fernandes actually started before Spurs even got involved. But that early advantage hasn’t turned into a decision. Tottenham has since pushed into advanced negotiations, and the whole thing could flip in 48 hours depending on what the kid wants.

Here’s the funny part. Both clubs are effectively waiting for Fernandes to say the magic words: ‘I only want to play for you.’ Once he does, they can go to West Ham with a stronger hand. The Hammers have him under contract through 2030, so they’re not desperate. But if Fernandes makes it clear he’s pushing for a move, West Ham’s leverage shrinks.

The numbers on Fernandes last season

He played 42 games for West Ham across all competitions. Five goals. Five assists. Not flashy stats for a box-to-box midfielder, but the advanced metrics tell a better story. He covers ground, hits long-range shots that keep defenders honest, and sees passes that most 21-year-olds don’t. He can slot in as a No. 6 or a No. 10 if you need him to. Versatility matters in a squad that’s trying to compete on multiple fronts.

United’s Michael Carrick has built a midfield that leans on energy and pressing. Fernandes fits that profile. He’s already Premier League proven, which means no adjustment period. That’s rare for a summer signing, especially one this young.

But let’s be real for a second. Fernandes also isn’t the kind of name that sells jerseys or moves the betting line. He’s a good young player with a high ceiling, but he’s not Kylian Mbappé. The race for his signature is a quiet one, fought in backroom calls and agent texts.

Arsenal was in the mix earlier this summer, according to Jacobs. PSG and Real Madrid have also shown appreciation from a distance. Nobody has actually pulled the trigger.

So here we are. Two English giants waiting on a 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder to make up his mind. It could be a done deal with Tottenham by the time you read this. Or it could drag on until August. Fernandes hasn’t said yes to anyone yet, and that indecision is the only firm fact in this whole saga.
