Manchester United backed out of a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson after medical concerns emerged. Now the Serie A side is doing something about it.
Atalanta has offered the Brazilian a new four-year contract with an option for a fifth season, according to journalist Nicolo Schira. The timing isn’t a coincidence. This comes right after his expected move to Old Trafford fell through.
United had agreed to a package worth around £37.8 million, per Sky Sports. But they decided not to go through with it at that price once issues popped up during the medical exam. The deal wasn’t completely dead under different terms, but United had already started looking elsewhere for midfield help.
What United was getting
Ederson had been identified as a potential replacement for Casemiro. His physical style, ability to win the ball back and willingness to carry it through midfield made him a natural fit for what Michael Carrick is trying to build. The 25-year-old looked like the kind of engine-room presence United have lacked for a while.
Football Italia reports Ederson’s current deal runs through 2027. Atalanta wants to improve both the length and the money. A successful renewal would make it much harder for anyone to pry him away later.
Two different reads on the same player
United was right to take medical red flags seriously. Committing a big fee and a long contract to a guy whose body gives you pause is how you end up with an expensive problem. You can’t un-ring that bell.
But here’s the other side. Atalanta clearly believes Ederson is healthy enough to warrant a significant new deal. They’re not treating him like damaged goods. They’re treating him like a core piece of their squad.
The collapse might just be two clubs making different assessments of the same risk. One side blinked. The other side sees an opportunity.
Ederson’s future is now in Bergamo, at least for the foreseeable future. And if he signs this extension, any team that wants him later will have to pay a lot more than £37.8 million.
