The Toronto Tempo didn’t just beat the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday night. They obliterated them. And in the process, they rewrote the WNBA record books.
Final score: 125-97 at Coca-Cola Coliseum. That’s the most points ever scored by a team in a regulation WNBA game, per TSN Sports’ Chelsea Leite. The old mark of 120 belonged to the Phoenix Mercury, set way back in 2009 against the Indiana Fever. Toronto blew past it with five minutes still left in the fourth quarter.
Marina Mabrey was the headliner. She tied the WNBA single-game scoring record with 53 points, matching A’ja Wilson and Liz Cambage. Mabrey shot 17-of-28 from the floor, including 9-of-18 from deep, and added six rebounds and two assists. It was the kind of night where every shot felt inevitable. Sparks defenders threw different looks at her. Didn’t matter.
Supporting cast showed up too
Julie Allemand put together a stat line that barely looks real: 13 points, six boards, 14 assists, and three steals. She was the engine. Maria Conde added 13 points and seven rebounds. Laura Juskaite came off the bench for 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Tempo shot 51% from the field and hit 20 of their 42 three-point attempts. They dominated the glass 52-30 and led by as many as 35 points.
Toronto jumped out to a 34-point first quarter and never let the Sparks sniff the lead. It was a statement win for a team that dropped a tough one to Atlanta earlier in the week. The Tempo improved to 9-9. The Sparks fell to 8-9 with their third loss in four games.
What this means for Toronto
It’s their debut season. They already set a franchise scoring high of 111 points against Chicago back in May. Now they hold a league-wide record that might stand for a while. Mabrey’s performance puts her in elite company. Wilson and Cambage are the only other players to score 53 in a game, and both did it in overtime. Mabrey did it in 40 minutes.
The Tempo will try to keep the momentum going. Next up is a road matchup with the Phoenix Mercury. Good luck slowing them down after this.
