Marcus Rashford’s Uncertain Future Puts a World Cup Star on Manchester United’s Radar

Manchester United have quietly begun exploring a move for Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville, whose performances at the World Cup have not gone unnoticed. The club’s interest, however, hinges heavily on what happens with Marcus Rashford this summer.

According to the NY Times, Summerville caught United’s eye after scoring for the Netherlands in their 2-2 draw with Japan. Despite West Ham suffering relegation last season, the 24-year-old’s stock has held steady, and the Hammers are expected to demand around £50 million for his signature. He remains under contract at the London Stadium until June 2029.

Rashford’s situation adds a layer of complexity. Barcelona declined to trigger a €30m purchase option after taking the English forward on loan. There is a £40m release clause in Rashford’s deal, though it specifically excludes Liverpool and Manchester City from activating it. Sources close to the player indicate he would prefer to see out the remaining 24 months of his contract at Old Trafford rather than join another Premier League rival. Still, United’s recruitment team is preparing for all scenarios.

Midfield remains the top priority

While the Summerville inquiry suggests forward planning, United’s immediate focus remains on reshaping the midfield. Atalanta’s Ederson is expected to complete a move to Manchester, and talks are progressing with West Ham for Mateus Fernandes. Personal terms for the Portuguese midfielder are not expected to be a stumbling block, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.

Arsenal eyeing a Greek winger as exits loom

Across north London, Arsenal are scouting Club Brugge’s Christos Tzolis, valued at roughly €40m. The Gunners are preparing for attacking departures: Leandro Trossard has drawn interest from Turkish clubs, and Gabriel Jesus could also be made available if the right offer arrives. Manager Mikel Arteta is keen to add versatility to his front line.

Chelsea and Liverpool reshape their wings

Chelsea have already completed a major sale, sending Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for €60m. The Blues are now searching for a left-sided defender who can also play further forward, with Strasbourg’s Valentin Barco fitting that profile. Adding a center-back and another attacker remain on the summer to-do list.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have made contact with RB Leipzig regarding Yan Diomande, a wide attacker valued at more than €130m. With Mohamed Salah no longer at Anfield, the club expects to bring in at least two new forwards before the window closes.

City, Barcelona, Madrid make moves

Manchester City are close to securing Josko Gvardiol on a new deal running through 2031. Barcelona have made signing a center-forward their top priority, with Julian Alvarez identified as the primary target. Real Madrid, who officially appointed Jose Mourinho on a contract through 2029, also completed the Cucurella signing from Chelsea.

For United, the Summerville interest is a clear signal: if Rashford goes, they already have a replacement in mind.
