Marcus Rashford is stuck in a weird spot. Manchester United wants to move on. He wants to leave. But nobody’s buying what they’re selling.
According to The Guardian, the 28-year-old forward is expected to be part of Michael Carrick’s squad when next season starts. That’s not because United suddenly loves having him around. It’s because they’ve tried to offload his £17.5 million annual salary and can’t find a taker.
This is not how either side thought things would go.
A Barcelona Loan That Didn’t Stick
Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona after falling out of favor at Old Trafford. His numbers were decent — 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions. Decent enough that you’d think someone would want to keep him.
Barcelona had a £26 million option to make the move permanent. They passed. Instead, they spent £69 million on Anthony Gordon, Rashford’s England teammate. That’s a pretty clear message about where they see the value.
Rashford has said publicly he’d love to go back to Camp Nou. But that door looks shut, at least for now.
World Cup Distraction
Right now, Rashford is in North America with England, preparing for a World Cup quarterfinal against Norway on Saturday. He’s played four games in the tournament and scored once, against Croatia. That’s probably a nice break from the uncertainty waiting for him back in Manchester.
But the calendar is going to catch up fast.
United’s preseason starts Thursday. Their first friendly is July 18 against Wrexham. Then it’s a run of games against Rosenborg, Atletico Madrid, PSG, Leeds United, and AC Milan before the Premier League opener at Hull City on August 22.
Rashford is an academy product, a homegrown guy who’s been around the club since he was a kid. That makes this whole situation a little messier emotionally. But the club’s financial reality is what it is. They want to cut payroll. He wants regular playing time. Neither thing seems to be happening easily.
For now, it looks like both sides are going to have to figure out how to work together for at least one more season. Or until someone actually makes an offer.
