Manchester United’s summer plan is starting to come into focus, and the headline is simple: midfield is the priority. But the details underneath it are a lot messier than the club would like.
According to Sky Sports, Aurelien Tchouameni and Alex Scott are both high on United’s list. So are Felix Nmecha, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Sander Berge. That’s a wide range. It goes from a Real Madrid starter to an 18-year-old at Lille to a veteran at Fulham. Which one actually arrives probably depends on how many other dominos fall first.
The Tchouameni Problem
Tchouameni is the big name, but he’s also the hardest to get. Real Madrid are working through their own midfield reshuffle, and the reporting in Spain suggests they’d rather move on Eduardo Camavinga if they need to clear space. That leaves United in a weird spot. They can want Tchouameni all they want. But wanting him doesn’t make Madrid sell.
So Scott looks more realistic, though Bournemouth have made it clear they don’t want to lose him. They’re pushing for a new deal instead. That means United would have to overpay to force the issue. Not a great position to be in when you’ve already got other holes to fill.
The Ederson Factor
One name that could shift everything is Atalanta’s Ederson. The report says a deal for him is expected to be finalized after Brazil finishes its World Cup run. If that happens, it changes the math. Ederson gives United a real physical presence in the middle. He’s built for the Premier League. After that, the next midfield addition can be chosen based on what the team actually needs, not just panic.
Bouaddi is the developmental play. United have checked in on him again this week, and the timing matters because he’s been impressive at the World Cup. He’s 18. He’s not an immediate fix. But if Ederson comes through, Bouaddi can be a project with a real path to minutes.
The Left Wing Thing
Then there’s the left wing situation. Crysencio Summerville is the top target there, and United have had exploratory talks with West Ham. The plan is to fund that deal by selling Marcus Rashford. That sounds clean in theory. In practice, Tottenham is also involved. And United just watched Spurs move decisively to land Mateus Fernandes for £85 million. The report warns that United could lose out on Summerville the same way if they don’t move fast.
So the picture is this: a club with a good shortlist but a tendency to let the market set the pace. If Erik ten Hag and his staff want a sharper, more athletic side, the front office has to show it can finish deals, not just scout them. The Ederson deal feels like the key. Get that done, and the rest of the summer starts to make sense. Keep waiting on Tchouameni while Real Madrid stall, and you might end up scrambling again in August.
