LeBron James Has a Six-Team Shortlist and the Warriors Aren’t the Only Surprise

LeBron James told the Lakers he’s not coming back next season. That part is old news at this point. What’s new is that the expected Golden State landing spot might not be the sure thing everyone assumed it was.

ESPN’s Shams Charania put together a shortlist of six teams that are legit possibilities for James. According to the report, those teams are the Warriors, Cavaliers, Heat, 76ers, Timberwolves and Nuggets. That’s a wide net for a guy who’s made it clear he wants to compete for another ring. And yeah, all six of those teams are contenders in some form. But the list also raises questions about how much LeBron’s camp is reshaping the narrative in real time.

James played 60 games this past regular season for the Lakers, averaging around 21 points. He even played alongside his son Bronny during the 2026 NBA Playoffs. But the Lakers got bounced by the Oklahoma City Thunder, and apparently that was enough for him to walk away.

The Warriors had seemed like the obvious destination. That shifted when the Sixers traded for Jaylen Brown. LeBron’s agent Rich Paul told reporters that move changed everything.

“Obviously, Jaylen Brown,” Paul said, explaining Philadelphia’s appeal. “Joel Embiid is health and habits. The health and habits of Embiid are there. LeBron enhances everything there. He unlocks everything there.”

It’s easy to see why that combination gets people’s attention. Embiid when healthy is a MVP-level center. Brown is a two-way wing who can score from anywhere. Add LeBron as the primary playmaker and you’ve got a trio that could cause serious problems in the East.

But Paul also cautioned against rushing into a decision. “As you’re going through this process, I’m saying to LeBron, ‘You really have to think this through,’” he said. “Everything looks great in July. Everything looks great on paper. But you got to be very careful with that.”

That’s the kind of advice you’d expect from someone who’s managed James’s career for two decades. The window is real though. LeBron turns 43 later this year and he’s chasing one more championship. He can’t afford to waste a season on a bad fit.

The Timberwolves and Nuggets are interesting because they’re both Western Conference teams with established cores. Cleveland would be a homecoming. Miami is where he won two titles. Philadelphia just got a lot more interesting with Brown in the mix.

No decision is expected anytime soon. LeBron is going to take his time, which is probably smart. The 2026-27 season is still months away. But the shortlist is out there now. And it’s a reminder that James controls his own narrative the way few players ever have.
