Manchester United’s Forgotten Goalkeeper Just Swept Bristol City’s Awards — Burnley Should Be All Over This

Burnley didn’t just lose a starting goalkeeper last summer. They lost a foundation. James Trafford’s move back to Manchester City after two seasons as a Championship standout and full England cap left a hole in the Clarets’ spine that never fully healed during their doomed Premier League campaign.

Now, with Martin Dubravka turning 37 and his contract expiring, Burnley’s search for a long-term answer between the posts has new urgency. And one name should be at the top of Scott Parker’s list: Radek Vitek.

Vitek, the Manchester United goalkeeper who spent last season on loan at Bristol City, quietly put together one of the best individual campaigns of any Championship player in 2025-26. The 22-year-old Czech was named Bristol City’s Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, and Players’ Player of the Year — a clean sweep that reflects just how dominant he was at Ashton Gate.

According to FotMob, only three goalkeepers in the division posted a better ‘goals prevented’ figure than Vitek’s 5.4. That number tells the story of a shot-stopper who made difficult saves look routine and kept his team in matches they had no business winning.

Why Burnley makes sense

Burnley know the formula. In 2023-24, they took a highly rated young goalkeeper from one side of Manchester and turned him into a promotion-defining player. The parallels between Trafford’s arrival from City and a potential move for Vitek from United are obvious. Both were unproven at senior level before their breakthroughs. Both had the physical tools — Vitek stands 6’6″ — and the temperament to handle the pressure of a promotion race.

The question is whether United will let him go. According to Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic, Michael Carrick views Senne Lammens, 23, as his first-choice goalkeeper moving forward. Sam Johnstone and Karl Darlow are being considered as backup options. That leaves Vitek on the outside looking in at Old Trafford, with two years remaining on his deal.

United’s position creates a genuine opportunity for Burnley. Vitek isn’t a project. He’s already proven he can perform at Championship level. He knows the league, the travel, the physicality. There’s no adaptation period. Burnley would be buying a player who could be the club’s No. 1 for the next decade, not a stopgap.

The catch

Price tag will be the main obstacle. United aren’t likely to let a 22-year-old who just dominated on loan leave cheaply. His stock is at an all-time high. But Burnley understand the math of promotion better than most — getting back to the Premier League is worth tens of millions. Viewing Vitek as an investment rather than an expense is the only logical approach.

Nothing is finalized, and Dubravka’s situation complicates the timeline. But if Burnley are serious about bouncing straight back, signing one of the Championship’s best goalkeepers from last season should be priority one. They’ve done it before. Repeating that formula might be the smartest move they make all summer.
