Bill Simmons Has a Blunt Response to LeBron James and Bojangles Buzz

LeBron James is 41 years old and still just as valuable as ever. That’s not an opinion. It’s a fact NBA front offices are going to have to deal with this summer. Every team with a shot at contention is trying to figure out if they can convince the league’s all-time leading scorer to pick them. And somehow, the Charlotte Hornets have found themselves with a weird kind of leverage.

A local news outlet, WBTV, ran with a story after James announced he wouldn’t be returning to the Lakers. The hook? LeBron loves Bojangles. The fried chicken chain was founded in Charlotte nearly five decades ago. It’s famous for that Cajun-seasoned chicken. And James, as it turns out, is a genuine fan.

ESPN’s Ryan McGee has talked about this before. Back when LeBron was with the Cavs and they’d roll into Charlotte, the guy would go out of his way to find Bojangles. Yes, the same LeBron who spends millions on his body and follows a strict diet. Even he has his weaknesses. The question is whether the lure of spicy chicken is enough to get him to sign with the Hornets.

Bill Simmons heard about this and couldn’t resist. The Ringer founder and podcaster took a friendly shot at his colleague Joe House, who is famously a Bojangles loyalist. “It’s definitely enough to land @HousefromDC,” Simmons joked. That’s about as close as anyone is getting to a serious answer on this topic.

Because let’s be real here. The Hornets are being linked to James because of chicken. That’s fun for a day of internet chatter. But the actual predictions have LeBron landing with the Warriors to play with Steph Curry and Draymond Green, or heading back to Cleveland or Miami. One option gives him a real chance at another ring with another all-time great. The other two are about legacy and sentimental returns.

Charlotte had a decent 2025-26 season. But they also just traded LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges. That’s a lot of roster turnover. They’ve got Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel and Coby White. Naz Reid and Grayson Allen provide some veteran stability. It’s not nothing. In a weak Eastern Conference, maybe they make noise. But it’s a long shot.

If you’re the Hornets, you try anything. Maybe you sit LeBron down with a family-size box of Bojangles and see where that gets you. It’s probably not going to work. But hey, it’s a better pitch than most teams have.
