Manchester United Walked Away From Ederson Transfer. Corinthians Lost $420K.

Manchester United pulled the plug on a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson after medical checks, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Brazilian was set to move to Old Trafford for around £38 million, but United backed out late in the process. That means the transfer is off, and Ederson stays in Serie A.

For Corinthians, the collapse comes with a small but real financial sting. Under FIFA’s solidarity mechanism, the club would have received about 1% of the fee — roughly $420,000 — for Ederson’s development between ages 20 and 22. That money is gone now.

How Corinthians got here

Ederson joined Corinthians in 2020 after leaving Cruzeiro. He played 25 games, scored three goals, and then went on loan to Fortaleza. Salernitana bought him for €6.5 million — about $7 million at the time — and Corinthians held 70% of his economic rights. That deal netted the club roughly $5 million.

From there, Ederson moved to Atalanta and turned into one of the better midfielders in Italy. Consistent performances, physical presence, the full package. United tracked him for months. Both clubs agreed on the fee. Then United changed course.

Atalanta, for what it’s worth, considers Ederson fully fit and expects him back with the squad soon. The club hasn’t commented on what changed with United’s position, but the message internally is clear: he’s still their guy.

This isn’t a huge loss for Corinthians in the grand scheme. $420,000 is real money but not program-changing. Still, it stings when you’re a selling club and a deal you counted on evaporates during medicals.

Ederson turns 27 next month. He’s not a kid anymore. His next shot at a Premier League move might not come around again. For now, he’s back at Atalanta, where he’s already proven he belongs.
