Manchester United Turns to 35-Year-Old Free Agent to Fix Goalkeeping Depth

Manchester United are closing in on a free transfer for Wales international Karl Darlow, and it tells you everything you need to know about how their goalkeeper room has shifted in just a few months.

The 35-year-old spent the last three seasons at Leeds United, where he stepped in for Illan Meslier late in the 2024/25 promotion push and made 24 appearances across all competitions last season. Now he’s a free agent and expected to sign with United as the No. 2 option behind Senne Lammens, according to journalists Laurie Whitwell and Patrick Boyland of The Athletic.

What happened to the other guys

André Onana left on loan to Trabzonspor. Altay Bayindir is expected to move on. Radek Vitek is likely headed out either on loan or permanently. Tom Heaton is still around but seems to be sliding further down the depth chart. Dermot Mee, the fourth-choice guy, just signed a new contract. So the picture is: Lammens starts, Darlow backs him up, and everyone else is either gone or on the way out.

That’s a lot of turnover for a club that spent big on Onana not that long ago. But United’s front office clearly felt the room needed a reset, and Darlow fits a specific need. He’s experienced, he’s cheap (free transfer), and he knows the Championship and Premier League grind from his time at Leeds and Newcastle before that.

A veteran addition, not a flashy one

Nobody is pretending Darlow is a marquee signing. He’s 35. He’s not going to push Lammens for the starting job. But he’s reliable, and after the Onana experiment went sideways, maybe that’s exactly what United need behind a young keeper like Lammens. A steady hand. A guy who won’t panic if he has to play 10-15 games.

Leeds fans will tell you Darlow was solid when called upon, even if he wasn’t spectacular. And at this stage of his career, that’s probably enough. United aren’t asking him to be the hero. They’re asking him to be available and professional.
