Manchester United’s midfield rebuild just took a sharp turn. The club is now in advanced talks to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, according to David Ornstein. It’s a surprising pivot given that just days ago, United seemed locked in on Atalanta’s Ederson.
Ornstein reports that all parties are in contact and working to finalize a deal. Tielemans himself is said to be keen on the move. The Telegraph’s John Percy adds that United will pay roughly £35 million for the 29-year-old Belgium international, thanks to a release clause in his Villa contract. Samuel Luckhurst of The Sun says a medical is scheduled for Tuesday.
It’s been a frustrating summer for INEOS in their search for midfield help. They missed out on top target Elliot Anderson, and both Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali ended up at Tottenham. A deal for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos is agreed at up to £50 million, but the club wanted at least two or three new options in the engine room. Tielemans represents the kind of Premier League-proven player they’ve circled for years, going back to his Leicester days.
Tielemans has 90 caps for Belgium and helped Villa win the Europa League last season, scoring in the final. He’s made 134 appearances under Unai Emery. At 29, he’s not a long-term project. He’s a ready-now starter.
This move comes together fast because United walked away from Ederson. The Brazilian had agreed personal terms and a £35 million fee before the World Cup, but United got cold feet after his medical raised concerns about his right knee. Atalanta insists Ederson is fully fit. Fabrizio Romano confirmed Monday that Atalanta received formal notice the deal is off. Ederson has already left England, disappointed — it was his dream move — and plans to go on holiday before rejoining Atalanta. He has one year left on his contract.
Ornstein says United could revisit the Ederson deal later in the window if other targets fall through. But with Tielemans moving fast, that possibility looks slim at best.
TEAMtalk understands United have also made contact over Wolves’ Joao Gomes and Roma’s Manu Kone. But for now, Tielemans is the one in the room, the one with the scheduled medical, the one who wants to be there. United need bodies in midfield. They need experience. Tielemans gives them both, and for a price that won’t wreck their summer budget. Sometimes the third or fourth option turns out to be the right one.
