Manchester United’s midfield rebuild got complicated fast. Elliot Anderson is heading to Manchester City for a fee that could hit £130 million. Sandro Tonali’s price tag scared them off. And Mateus Fernandes? He picked Tottenham over Old Trafford despite the whole Bruno Fernandes connection angle. That one stings.
But sitting in plain sight is a midfielder United have been linked with before. Monaco’s Lamine Camara. And Brighton want him too. That alone should make United pay attention.
Brighton’s track record is the selling point
The Seagulls don’t miss on midfielders. Carlos Baleba, Moises Caicedo, Yves Bissouma. All three came through Brighton’s system and left for massive fees. If Brighton sees Camara as the next Baleba replacement, United should just skip the middleman and take him themselves.
According to Mike McGrath, Monaco could let Camara go for around £35 million. That’s pocket change compared to what United just lost out on. And it’s exactly the kind of price that turns into £100 million a year later if he blows up in England.
What Camara actually brings
He’s 22, Senegalese, and plays box-to-box with a defensive edge. He wins loose balls, tackles hard, breaks up plays in dangerous areas. But he’s not just a destroyer. He makes vertical passes, gets forward, and delivers set pieces better than most midfielders his age.
He’s not Fernandes. He’s more of a defensive workhorse who can still contribute going forward. And that’s fine because United need that balance. Pair him with someone like Ederson or Manu Kone or Alex Scott and suddenly the midfield looks way more threatening.
The Ligue 1 pipeline for midfielders is real. Bruno Guimaraes, N’Golo Kante, Fabinho, Lucas Paqueta. All came from France and made noise in the Premier League. Camara could be the next one.
Reports say United are willing to gamble on raw talent after missing their top targets. Camara is exactly that kind of bet. And at £35 million, it’s a bet they can afford to lose. But if Brighton signs him and flips him for triple the price in two years, United will be kicking themselves again.
