Manchester United Shifts Focus to Alex Scott as Mateus Fernandes Deal Hits Trouble

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild just got a lot more complicated. The club has been pushing hard to bring Mateus Fernandes in from West Ham, but that deal keeps running into problems. Now there’s a real chance they might pivot to Bournemouth’s Alex Scott instead.

What’s Going Wrong With Fernandes

West Ham’s asking price was the first issue. But then Real Madrid and Tottenham showed up, and things got messy. Spurs are reportedly close to agreeing personal terms with Fernandes. If they match West Ham’s valuation, the Portuguese international could end up in North London rather than at Old Trafford. That’s not the outcome United wanted.

INEOS, United’s co-owners, have been careful not to put all their eggs in one basket. They’ve been tracking other options the whole time, especially midfielders who already know the Premier League.

Alex Scott Emerges as a Real Option

Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is the name that keeps coming up. The 22-year-old English midfielder has been on United’s radar, and it sounds like they’ve done more than just window shop. According to a reliable source known as Sully, United’s representatives have met with Scott’s agents in recent days and weeks.

Bournemouth is trying to lock Scott into a new contract, but so far no deal has been signed. Even if he does put pen to paper, matching his release clause wouldn’t be a problem for a club like United. That’s the kind of flexibility that makes this a realistic fallback plan.

Sully put it bluntly: “Mateus Fernandes is United’s main priority, and they are in ongoing talks with West Ham and his agents on this deal. However, this doesn’t mean we aren’t doing any other business elsewhere. We are constantly having meetings with the agents of targets and clubs too. A quick example I can give you is that we have had fresh talks with the agents of Alex Scott in recent days and weeks. There have also been checks made on other positions as the data pool has shortened.”

The Bigger Picture for United’s Midfield

United already landed Ederson earlier this window. Michael Carrick wants at least three new faces in his midfield, and the ideal scenario would be Fernandes plus one more. Alex Scott could be that third option. But it’s not guaranteed yet.

INEOS now has a decision to make. Do they hold firm on not overpaying for Fernandes and pivot to Scott? Or do they finally cave on West Ham’s demands, get their guy, and then move on to the next target? Either way, the clock is ticking.

One thing is clear: United’s midfield rebuild is not going according to plan, but they’ve got options. Scott is a good one.
