Manchester United women’s team made their first move of the summer transfer window official on Wednesday, signing Spanish full-back Andrea Medina on a three-year deal. The 22-year-old arrives from Atletico Madrid after a breakout season that saw her face her new club three times in European competition.
Medina made 44 appearances for Atletico last season, a heavy workload for a player her age. But it was those head-to-head matchups with United that really sold her on the move. She saw the atmosphere up close. She felt the energy from the traveling supporters. And she decided she wanted to be on the other side of it.
“Competing against United last season showed me how strong the group is and just how much this club means to our supporters,” Medina said. “The passion from everyone who traveled over to Madrid was unbelievable. That atmosphere stayed with me and I cannot wait to represent you every time I step onto the pitch.”
United announced the signing a day after confirming Hannah Blundell’s departure, which gives the arrival a bit of a reshuffle feel. Blundell was a steady presence on the back line. Medina is younger, more of a modern attacking full-back who likes to get forward and combine with the wingers. It’s a stylistic shift as much as a personnel change.
Spanish youth international brings versatility and European experience
Medina has represented Spain at various youth levels and brings Champions League experience with her. She’s comfortable on either flank, which gives manager Marc Skinner options. At 22, she’s not a finished product, but the raw tools are obvious. Good pace. Clean passing. A willingness to take risks in the final third.
“Manchester United has an incredible history, and I am excited to join a team that is determined to write its own chapter at one of the most important clubs in the world,” she said.
The English game is more physical than what she’s used to in Liga F. That’s the adjustment everyone will be watching. But Medina says she’s ready for that intensity. She’ll get a chance to prove it in preseason, assuming she gets through her medical and visa formalities without issue.
United didn’t confirm the transfer fee, but reports out of Spain peg it somewhere in the low six figures. For a player with Medina’s upside and international pedigree, that feels like a solid bit of business. The club has been quiet in the market so far, but this signing signals they’re not done yet.
The official announcement came through the club’s channels on July 1, the first day of the new contract year. Medina is now officially a Red Devil. She’s the first piece of what looks like an active summer ahead.
