Manchester United Open Talks for Summerville, but There’s a Catch Involving Rashford

Manchester United are back in east London. This time, they’re not chasing Mateus Fernandes. They’re setting their sights on Crysencio Summerville, the Dutch winger who turned heads at the World Cup before his team went home early.

According to talkSPORT reporter Ben Jacobs, United have made direct contact with West Ham. The club is calling the conversations “exploratory at this stage,” which is typical language when a team hasn’t put a formal bid on the table yet. But Summerville is high on United’s list of left-wing targets, and the Hammers are listening.

This comes after United spent the better part of a month trying to pry Fernandes away from West Ham. That didn’t work. Tottenham stepped in and paid a guaranteed £85 million for the midfielder, and West Ham had no reason to play nice with a direct rival. But the two clubs kept talking. Now United needs a winger.

What Summerville brings

Summerville is 24, fast, and comfortable on the ball. West Ham teammate Jean-Clair Todibo called him “incredible” earlier this year, and that tracks. The Dutch international was one of the few bright spots for the Netherlands at the World Cup — he was directly involved in four goals despite his team crashing out early in the knockout stage. His pace and dribbling fit what United lacks on the left side.

But here’s the thing. Jacobs reports that any serious move for Summerville, or for Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr who’s also on United’s radar, likely depends on Marcus Rashford leaving.

The Rashford situation is messy

Rashford has had a rough World Cup under Thomas Tuchel. The manager has leaned heavily on Anthony Gordon instead, a pattern that echoes Barcelona choosing the Newcastle winger over Rashford. The 28-year-old is due back at Carrington after the tournament, and there’s been talk of reintegrating him into the squad. But most people around the club believe both sides would rather move on.

Rashford’s form has dipped, his role has shrunk, and United needs to free up wages and a roster spot. Selling him would clear the path for a younger option like Summerville. The question is whether any club will meet United’s asking price for a player who hasn’t looked like his old self in a while.

For now, United is doing the groundwork. Talking to West Ham. Poking around. Testing the market. Summerville is interested, but nothing happens unless Rashford is out the door first.
