Manchester United Lock In Colombian Teen Prodigy Cristian Orozco, Medical Already Scheduled

Manchester United is about to add another name to its youth pipeline, and this one has been in the works for a while. Colombian midfield prospect Cristian Orozco is finally set to make the move to Old Trafford, with a medical reportedly booked and travel arrangements already locked in.

The 17-year-old playmaker, who turns 18 on July 13, first agreed to join United last year under a pre-contract deal that would trigger once he hit that age. According to Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra, Orozco flew to the UK on Sunday accompanied by United’s lead South America scout, Giuseppe Antonaccio. The medical is expected to happen this week, and the official announcement could drop right around his birthday.

Orozco won’t be rushed into first-team duty

This isn’t a signing meant to fix Michael Carrick’s midfield problem right now. Orozco is a developmental piece. The plan, per the Manchester Evening News, is for him to join United’s Under-21 squad for their preseason tour of Germany under Adam Lawrence. After that, the club will assess where he fits, but the early expectation is that he sticks around in Manchester this season to acclimate rather than go straight out on loan.

United has followed this blueprint before with young internationals from South America and Africa. Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon and Malian midfielder Sekou Kone both came in with similar timelines. Kone spent the second half of last season on loan in Switzerland with Lausanne-Sport, but Orozco may skip that step for now.

He’s no random project, either. Orozco captained Colombia’s U-17 side to the final of the South American Championship on home soil last year. They lost to Brazil, but his leadership and technical skill stood out. He’s considered one of the top young talents in Colombian football.

Carrick’s midfield rebuild is bigger than one teenager

The real story at United this summer is a full-scale midfield overhaul. Casemiro is gone at the end of his contract, reportedly headed to Inter Miami to join Lionel Messi in MLS. That leaves a massive hole in the center of the park, and Carrick has been busy.

A $37 million deal for Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta was already struck back in May, but the move got delayed when Ederson was called up to Brazil’s World Cup squad as a late injury replacement. That’s a temporary snag, not a deal-breaker.

Beyond that, United is reportedly battling Tottenham for Mateus Fernandes, whose West Ham side got relegated from the Premier League. The club has also kicked the tires on Sandro Tonali, Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, and Aurelien Tchouameni, among others. Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte was a possible sale to free up space, but a knee ligament injury he suffered with Uruguay at the World Cup will keep him sidelined for a significant stretch.

The United lineup is shifting elsewhere too. Rasmus Hojlund’s loan to Napoli turned into a permanent $38 million move after Napoli qualified for the Champions League. Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia were both released. And with former boss Ruben Amorim now at AC Milan, names like Mason Mount and Amad Diallo have started popping up in San Siro rumors. Young striker Chido Obi is reportedly in talks for a loan to Bundesliga side Cologne.

For now, Orozco is a low-key arrival. But if his trajectory holds, he might be the kind of name fans remember as the start of something bigger.
