Manchester United is reportedly looking at a £140 million double swoop that would bring former Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville back to the Premier League — this time in a West Ham United shirt before taking it off again.
The Daily Mail reports that United is weighing a move for Summerville alongside Hammers midfielder Mateus Fernandes as the club reshapes its attack. Marcus Rashford is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer, which opens up both a spot on the wing and room in the wage bill.
Summerville left Leeds for West Ham in 2024 after his release clause was triggered. That came after a monster Championship season where he put up 21 goals and 10 assists, sweeping up individual awards. Leeds lost the play-off final to Southampton, and Summerville followed Archie Gray and Georginio Rutter out the door.
From Slow Start to Red-Hot Form
His first months at West Ham were rough. But Summerville flipped a switch early this year, scoring six goals in seven games to keep the Hammers alive in the relegation fight until the final day. West Ham beat Leeds 3-0 that last weekend, but Tottenham’s win over Everton sent them down anyway.
Now a fire sale is expected at the London Stadium. Summerville has drawn interest from top Premier League clubs and teams across Europe. United sees him as a versatile wide option who can also play through the middle if needed.
Fernandes is the other piece of the puzzle. United needs midfield depth and the Portuguese youngster fits the profile of a technical, progressive passer. West Ham wants to sell the pair together for a combined fee, though United will try to negotiate that number down.
Summerville’s price tag could get a boost from the World Cup. He curled in a beautiful goal on his tournament debut for the Netherlands in their 2-2 draw against Japan. Former Leeds scout Gaby Ruiz shouted him out on DAZN with a simple message: “Do you remember me Cry? Congratulations.” Summerville replied, “Thank you Gaby.”
The Athletic has separately reported an approximate valuation for Summerville, who finished last season with five goals and two assists in the Premier League. Not eye-popping numbers, but his second-half surge showed the kind of form that made him a nightmare in the Championship.
United hasn’t confirmed any of this publicly. West Ham hasn’t either. But with relegation clauses likely kicking in and the summer window about to open, this one feels like it’s got legs.
