Manchester United pulled the plug on a deal to sign Atalanta midfielder Éderson after the player underwent medical tests, according to multiple reports. The Brazilian will stay in Serie A after the transfer collapsed, a move that also hits his former club Corinthians in the pocket.
United had been tracking Éderson for months. The two sides had reportedly agreed on a fee around £38 million, roughly R$ 260 million. But the club changed direction late in the process and decided not to finalize the signing. Atalanta, for their part, believe Éderson is fully fit and expect him back with the squad soon.
The Financial Fallout for Corinthians
The failed deal also means Corinthians miss out on a solidarity payment through FIFA’s mechanism. The club was due about R$ 2.36 million, equal to 1% of the transfer fee for training Éderson between the ages of 20 and 22. It’s not a massive chunk of change for a club of their size, but every bit helps in Brazilian football’s shaky financial landscape.
Éderson’s path to Europe started at Corinthians. He joined them in 2020 after tearing up his contract with Cruzeiro. He played 25 times and scored three goals before being loaned to Fortaleza. Then came the move to Salernitana for €6.5 million. Corinthians owned 70% of his economic rights at the time and pocketed roughly R$ 27 million from that sale.
His time in Italy was a slow burn. At Salernitana he showed flashes, but it wasn’t until he joined Atalanta that he really took off. He became one of the better midfielders in Serie A, drawing interest from bigger clubs. United were the first to get serious, but they backed out at the last second.
What’s Next for United and Éderson?
It’s not clear why United walked away. Some speculation points to concerns from the medical staff. Others say the club simply shifted priorities for the rest of the window. Either way, Éderson stays put for now. Atalanta fans probably aren’t complaining. He’s a key piece for them.
As for Corinthians, they’ll have to wait for another big payday. The solidarity fee was a bonus they likely factored into their budget. Now it’s gone, and the club moves on.
