Manchester United Are Ready to Pay £50 Million for Andrey Santos. Here’s What They’re Getting.

Manchester United have their eyes on Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, and according to The Guardian, they’re willing to pay around £50 million to bring him to Old Trafford this summer. That’s a serious number for a 22-year-old who just wrapped up his first full season as a regular in the Premier League.

The Brazilian made 43 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea last season. He scored three goals and added four assists. Those aren’t jaw-dropping numbers for an attacking midfielder, but Santos isn’t really that kind of player. He’s more of a box-to-box guy who does a lot of the dirty work that doesn’t show up on a stat sheet.

What Santos Actually Does on the Field

He loves a tackle. He reads the game well enough to pick off passes and break up opposing attacks. When the other team is pushing forward, he’s usually the one stepping up to slow things down. He’s also a solid passer, which helps keep possession moving.

Santos can play as a holding mid if needed, but his best role is running box to box. That kind of energy and versatility is exactly what Michael Carrick needs in midfield. United’s engine room has looked a bit flat at times, and Santos would bring a different gear.

The Price Tag and the Contract Situation

Here’s the tricky part: Santos signed a long-term deal at Stamford Bridge that runs through 2030. That gives Chelsea all the leverage. They don’t have to sell, and they know United are desperate for midfield help. So £50 million might be the starting point, not the final number.

For a 22-year-old who already knows the league and has room to grow, it’s not crazy money in today’s market. But it’s a bet that he can take another step forward once he’s not competing for minutes in Chelsea’s crowded midfield.

Familiar With the League, Ready to Move?

Santos has Premier League experience under his belt. That matters. He won’t need a season to adjust to the pace or the physicality. If United get this done, he could slot into the lineup pretty quickly.

Carrick has been rebuilding this United side piece by piece. Adding a young, hungry midfielder who can do a bit of everything fits the profile. Santos isn’t a superstar signing — not yet anyway. But he’s the kind of player who could become one if given the right platform.

Whether Chelsea actually lets him go is another question. But United are making their move. And at £50 million, they’re serious.
