The Chicago Bulls haven’t had much to celebrate lately. Four straight seasons without a playoff appearance. A 31-win campaign in 2025-26 that tied their worst mark since 2020-21. But this summer, they landed a rookie who might just shift the tone around the franchise.
Caleb Wilson, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, showed up to the league with a mentality that’s already turning heads. The former North Carolina forward sat down with the Game Over podcast recently and dropped a line that sums up his approach pretty clearly.
“If you’re sleeping in, somebody’s working,” Wilson said. The Atlanta native didn’t say it like he was delivering a motivational speech. He just stated it as a fact, the way someone talks about a rule they actually live by.
Wilson isn’t pretending the grind is fun. He acknowledged the trade-off directly. “It’s all worth it in the end, to have the lifestyle we have, and to have the ability to do the things and see the things were able to see.” That’s the kind of honesty that tends to play well in Chicago, a city that respects hard work more than hype.
The long road for a lottery pick
Wilson spent just one season at UNC before declaring for the draft. College basketball fans saw flashes of his two-way potential, but the Bulls are betting on what he can become rather than what he already is. He knows that. There’s a difference between getting drafted and becoming the kind of player people remember.
Wilson said his goal is to be a “legendary” Bull. That’s a big word for a 19-year-old who hasn’t played a single NBA game yet. But the kid seems to understand that talking is the easy part. He’s going to have to back it up when the lights come on this fall.
The Bulls need him to. Chicago’s front office has been searching for a cornerstone piece since the roster started trending sideways. Wilson has the physical tools and the right mindset on paper. Now it’s about whether he can translate that into wins.
For a franchise that’s been stuck in neutral, a rookie who shows up ready to outwork everybody is at least a step in the right direction. The games haven’t started yet. But the message is already clear: Wilson isn’t here to just collect a paycheck.
