Manchester United has a decision to make on Radek Vitek. And the 22-year-old goalkeeper just made it a lot harder to ignore.
Vitek played 45 minutes in a preseason friendly against Wrexham over the weekend. But he made it clear afterward that his ambitions go way beyond warmup games and bench duty at Old Trafford. He wants to be a No. 1 somewhere, and he’s not shy about saying so.
“I’m ready to go somewhere again and hopefully be number one,” Vitek told The Athletic. “It depends on what the club wants and also on the options. There has been a few interests on the table. We’re hoping to choose the best one, and hopefully it will happen soon.”
That’s about as direct as a player can get without actually demanding a transfer. He’s not burning bridges. But he’s also not pretending he’s okay with being third or fourth on the depth chart behind Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir and whoever else United has in mind.
Loan success made this inevitable
Vitek spent last season on loan at Bristol City in the Championship. And it went about as well as it could have. He played 41 games, kept 12 clean sheets and cleaned up at the club’s end-of-season awards: Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year. According to talkSPORT, he swept all three.
That kind of performance changes expectations. A guy who just got voted the best player on a Championship team probably isn’t coming back to sit in an U-23 match or wait for an FA Cup third round start. He’s outgrown that stage.
What happens next
United still has Vitek under contract through 2028. So they hold the cards. But they also have to think about what’s best for his development. Another loan — maybe to a Premier League side or back to the Championship for a full season as a starter — would be the safest route. It keeps his value up and lets United evaluate him against top competition over a whole year.
A permanent sale with a buy-back clause is also on the table. That gives Vitek the long-term stability he’s looking for while letting United protect itself in case he turns into a star. Multiple clubs have already reached out, according to reports.
Vitek said the team is weighing those options now. “We’re hoping to choose the best one, and hopefully it will happen soon.”
United has a history of letting young keepers go and then watching them thrive elsewhere. Dean Henderson is the most obvious recent example. Whether that pattern repeats itself here depends on how the club reads Vitek’s timeline and whether they see a real path to him eventually taking over as the starter. Right now, that path looks pretty narrow with Onana locked in as the guy.
