Man United Unlocks $100M in Extra Funds — Here’s Who Could Follow Ederson and Fernandes to Old Trafford

Manchester United is making it clear this summer isn’t about small moves. After locking in a $39 million deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson and pushing hard for West Ham’s Matheus Fernandes at $80 million, the club has reportedly found a way to free up another $100 million by refinancing Glazer-era debt. The question now isn’t whether they’ll spend — it’s how many more pieces they can add before the window closes.

The Ederson signing is expected to be made official in early July, but he was never going to be the only new face in midfield. With Manuel Ugarte likely to follow Casemiro out the door, United’s front office has identified the middle of the park as the top priority. Fernandes, 21, emerged as one of the Premier League’s breakout midfielders in the 2025-26 campaign, and reports from Friday suggest United have moved ahead of Arsenal and other suitors for his signature.

A Third Midfielder Could Be Coming

According to The Daily Mail, United’s summer shopping list includes targets in three distinct price brackets — $80 million, $40 million, and $20 million. Ederson and Fernandes would cover the top two tiers, leaving the door open for a cheaper option. Southampton’s Shea Charles was under consideration for that third slot, but he now appears headed elsewhere in the Premier League.

Bournemouth’s Alex Scott remains on the radar as well. The 22-year-old midfielder has drawn interest from both United and Arsenal, though Bournemouth is pushing to keep him and lock him into a new long-term deal. Whether United could pull off deals for both Fernandes and Scott depends heavily on offloading Ugarte and trimming salary elsewhere, according to The Telegraph.

Beyond Midfield — Defense, Attack, and Depth

United’s shopping list doesn’t stop in midfield. Reports indicate the club is also targeting a left-back, a forward, a backup goalkeeper, and potentially a center-back. That’s a full-scale roster retooling, and it suggests the club’s hierarchy believes a few key additions — plus the right departures — could close the gap at the top of the table.

None of this is officially confirmed, of course. United has not commented on the refinancing report or the specific targets linked to that extra $100 million. But the pattern is clear: a club that finished the 2025-26 season with obvious gaps in midfield and depth is moving aggressively to address them before the new campaign kicks off.

Fans online have noted that the Fernandes pursuit alone would mark a statement signing — an $80 million outlay for a player who torched Premier League defenses last season. Add Ederson’s arriving profile, and the midfield suddenly looks transformed. The question is whether United can pull off the full three-midfielder plan or if financial realities will force them to prioritize.
