Man United Locks Up Homegrown Keeper Amid Major Goalkeeping Shake-Up

Manchester United has quietly secured one piece of its future between the posts. Dermot Mee, a homegrown goalkeeper who has been with the club since he was 11 years old, signed a two-year contract extension. The club made the announcement official on Friday.

It’s a fairly straightforward move on the surface. But the timing matters. United is staring down a near-total rebuild of its goalkeeping room this summer, and keeping a reliable depth piece like Mee around gives them a little breathing room.

The Goalkeeper Carousel Spinning at Old Trafford

Andre Onana is expected to head back to Trabzonspor for another loan spell after spending the entire 2025-26 season there. He apparently wanted to stay and fight for his job, but Senne Lammens has basically locked down the No. 1 spot since arriving from Royal Antwerp last summer. Onana didn’t have a real path back into the lineup.

Then there’s Altay Bayindir. His three-year stint at United never really got off the ground. Former manager Ruben Amorim gave him a chance early last season, but a few high-profile mistakes opened the door for Lammens. Now Bayindir is reportedly drawing interest from Besiktas and Fenerbahce back in Turkey.

Radek Vitek Could Be the Next One Out

Radek Vitek spent last season on loan at Bristol City and played well. The Czech youth international appeared in 41 Championship matches and kept 12 clean sheets. That kind of production gets noticed. Hull City and Coventry City are both reportedly keeping tabs on him, according to a report from last month.

If all three of those guys move on — and it sounds like they might — United will need to bring in at least one new goalkeeper. Maybe two. Just to make sure Michael Carrick has enough options in training and on matchday.

What Mee Brings to the Table

Mee is 23, an Academy graduate, and has spent years bouncing around on loan to get real minutes. The club’s official statement called him “excellent support and competition for the goalkeeper group,” which is basically the polite way of saying he’s a solid backup who won’t cause problems. The new deal is reportedly a reward for his development and contributions behind the scenes.

United has also been linked to Karl Darlow and a younger prospect named Kit Margetson. So the front office is clearly thinking about the long game here. Mee’s extension is just one piece of a bigger puzzle that’s still taking shape.

For now, Lammens is the guy. Everyone else is either leaving or being reshuffled. And Mee just made sure he’ll be in the building to see how it all plays out.
