Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek dropped a pretty blunt truth bomb after Saturday’s friendly loss to Wrexham. The 23-year-old Czech keeper played the second half of the 1-0 defeat and kept a clean sheet in his time on the field, but what he said afterward caught everyone off guard.
Vitek told reporters in the mixed zone that he wants out this summer. Loan or permanent sale, he doesn’t really care which. He just wants to play somewhere, every week, and that’s not happening at Old Trafford anytime soon.
“I feel great and ready to go again. Someday I hope to be a No. 1,” Vitek said. “At the moment I am still here, but we will see, I hope (I can leave). I hope there will be some interest. You will know when things are more concrete.”
The timing is interesting. Vitek has been with United since 2020, first in the academy setup, then on loans at Accrington Stanley, Bristol City, and Austrian side FC Blau-Weiß Linz. He’s never made a competitive first-team appearance for the club. Not one.
Senne Lammens is locked in as the starter right now. United also brought in Karl Darlow on a free transfer earlier this month and extended Tom Heaton’s contract. That’s three keepers ahead of Vitek on the depth chart, and the season hasn’t even started yet. His path to playing time basically doesn’t exist.
Vitek: “I am ready to go for both”
Asked whether he preferred a loan or a permanent move, Vitek kept it simple. He’s open to whatever gets him on the field.
“I am ready to go for both, to be fair,” he said. “Depends what the club wants, depends on the options, we’ll see. There is interest on the table, but we are hoping to get the best one.”
He didn’t name the interested clubs. That’s probably for his agent to sort out. But the fact that he’s even talking publicly about leaving suggests things are moving behind the scenes.
Vitek also made it clear this isn’t a spur-of-the-moment thing. He’s been thinking about it. He’s done the loans, he’s developed, and now he wants to see if that development leads somewhere real.
“My mind is the same, I want to play every week, that is the goal for next season,” he said. “I think hopefully we will find out soon where that is gonna be. I think I have grown in the past two and a half years, I’ve been on a few loans. I have grown person-wise, and on the pitch as well. I feel ready before the season for a loan.”
The Wrexham friendly was always going to be a side note in United’s preseason. But Vitek turned a meaningless 45 minutes of preseason soccer into the kind of honest admission you don’t hear from squad players very often. He’s not hiding. He wants out, and he said it out loud.
