Lucas Bergvall Wants Out of Tottenham and the Timing Couldn’t Be More Awkward

Lucas Bergvall has told Tottenham Hotspur he wants to leave this summer. The 20-year-old Swedish midfielder is currently at the World Cup with his national team, and according to reports, he’s made it clear to the club that he’s ready for a new challenge.

This is a sharp turn for a guy who was Tottenham’s Player of the Year in 2025. He joined from Djurgarden in 2024 and looked like the real deal almost immediately. That first season under Ange Postecoglou? Huge. He helped Spurs lift the Europa League trophy, ending a long drought for the club. But things have changed fast.

Coaching Carousel Messed With His Role

Bergvall is still under contract until 2031. That’s a lot of time left on the deal. But his role has shrunk under three different managers. Thomas Frank played him out wide. Igor Tudor barely gave him minutes. And now Roberto De Zerbi’s tactical system doesn’t feature a natural spot for an eight — Bergvall’s preferred position. He started one game early under De Zerbi but never locked down a regular spot.

The club has also been linked with midfielders like Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. That’s not great news for a young guy trying to carve out space in the squad.

There’s No Shortage of Interest

Premier League clubs have already sniffed around. Teams from other big European leagues are watching too. Tottenham turned down approaches in the winter window and said they didn’t want to sell. But with the player now pushing for a move, that stance might get tested again.

Bergvall just became Sweden’s youngest ever World Cup player, by the way. He picked up an assist in their opening win over Tunisia. So his profile is rising fast. That makes this timing even trickier for Tottenham.

The next few weeks will probably decide if he stays or goes. Right now it’s looking like he’s heading out the door, and Spurs have one of their most talented young assets to either keep or cash in on. No easy answer here.
