Arsenal Has Entered the Race for Igor Thiago. That Changes Everything for Manchester United.

Michael Carrick has a problem. It’s a good problem, but it’s still a problem.

Manchester United needs a striker. That’s not new. But the calculus has shifted now that Rasmus Hojlund’s move to Napoli is done and Joshua Zirkzee could be next out the door. Benjamin Sesko is talented but he can’t do it alone. And United learned the hard way what happens when you bet everything on one center forward.

Enter Igor Thiago. The Brentford striker scored 22 goals in 38 Premier League games last season. That’s not a fluke in a small sample. That’s a full season of putting the ball in the net for a team that doesn’t create endless chances. He’s strong. He runs at defenders. He lives in the penalty box. And he just made Brazil’s World Cup squad.

The asking price is around €80 million, roughly £69 million. That’s a lot. But Premier League proven goalscorers don’t come cheap, and Brentford knows what they have.

Arsenal makes things complicated

According to RTI Esporte, Arsenal has joined the race. That changes the timeline for United. Arsenal might sell Gabriel Jesus this summer and they see Thiago as a real option alongside Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres. For Thiago, the choice between Champions League football at Arsenal versus a rebuild at United is not a hard one.

United can’t afford to drag this out. They’ve been burned before by waiting too long on transfer targets. If Carrick wants Thiago, the club needs to move with purpose.

What’s interesting here is not just the player but what the pursuit says about United’s strategy. They’re not looking for another project. Thiago is 24 years old and already battle tested in the Premier League. He’s not a kid who might develop in two years. He’s ready now.

The risk is real at €80 million. One excellent season doesn’t guarantee sustained production. But United has spent bigger money on strikers who never figured it out. This would be a bet on a guy who has already proven he can score in English football. That’s worth something.

For Arsenal, this feels opportunistic. They see a chance to grab a proven striker while United hesitates. For United, it could become essential. Hojlund is gone. Zirkzee might follow. Suddenly Thiago isn’t just an option. He might be the only realistic option left on the board.

Carrick needs to decide quickly. The market doesn’t wait.
