Liverpool have made one thing absolutely clear: Virgil van Dijk isn’t going anywhere this summer. Despite swirling rumors that the club might listen to offers for their 34-year-old captain, the front office has shut that down hard.
The Athletic’s James Pearce reported that new head coach Andoni Iraola considers van Dijk a key piece for the upcoming season. And with Ibrahima Konate already gone to Real Madrid on a free transfer, letting the Dutch center back walk would leave a crater in the defense.
Why the panic? Konate’s departure changes everything
Konate’s move to Madrid wasn’t exactly expected. Talks for a new contract fell apart and the Frenchman walked out the door for nothing. That hurt. Losing van Dijk on top of that? That’s not something Liverpool can afford right now.
Joe Gomez also has just one year left on his deal, so his future is up in the air. If the club let van Dijk go too, they’d suddenly need two starting-caliber center backs before the window closes. That’s a lot of business to do in a short time.
He’s not the player he was. But he’s still the guy.
Let’s be honest. Van Dijk at 34 isn’t the same force he was during that 2019-20 title run. Father Time catches everyone. But he still logged 54 appearances across all competitions last season. That’s not a guy who’s ready for the pasture.
He joined Liverpool in January 2018 and has racked up 374 appearances since. Two Premier League titles. A Champions League trophy. He’s seen it all. And Iraola clearly values that experience in a squad that’s about to go through some transition.
The club’s stance is simple: van Dijk stays for at least one more season. Whether that leads to a longer extension or a planned exit next summer, nobody’s saying. But for now, the rumors about a late-career move are dead.
Stats from Transfermarkt show the defender’s numbers have dipped slightly, but Liverpool aren’t shopping him. Not even close. And with Konate gone, keeping van Dijk looks less like sentiment and more like survival.
