Liverpool Made Contact for Mateus Fernandes. The Price Tag Is the Problem.

Mateus Fernandes wants out of West Ham. That much has been clear since the club dropped into the Championship. The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder doesn’t want to spend his prime in the second division, and Liverpool just made the first real move to pull him out.

Football Insider reports that Liverpool have contacted West Ham about a potential deal. They need a central midfielder who can bring some athleticism and energy to the middle of the park, and Fernandes fits that profile. He’s quick, he’s technical, and he’s exactly the kind of player who could slot into Arne Slot’s system.

But here’s the thing. West Ham want £85 million.

That asking price is going to be a problem

For a 21-year-old who just played a full season in a team that got relegated? That’s a lot. And Liverpool have other holes to fill. They need a defender, maybe another forward depending on who leaves, and depth in a few other spots. Dropping nearly a hundred million on one midfielder doesn’t seem like the smartest move when you’ve got multiple needs. The club has not confirmed anything, and it’s worth noting they rarely spend that big on one player unless it’s a sure thing.

Manchester United and Tottenham also have their eyes on him. Both clubs could use a midfielder of his quality, maybe even more than Liverpool. United’s midfield has been a mess for years, and Spurs could use someone who can actually carry the ball forward. But £85 million is a tough pill for any of them to swallow.

West Ham might have to be realistic here. If they want to sell, they’ll probably need to lower that number. Fernandes won’t want to hang around in the Championship, and the longer this drags, the less leverage the club has. Come August, that price tag might start looking negotiable.

Fernandes has the talent to play at the top level

He’s quick, clean on the ball, and reads the game well for a 21-year-old. He’s not a pure destroyer or a pure creator — he’s more of a box-to-box type who can do a bit of everything. That’s valuable in the Premier League, especially for a club like Liverpool that wants to press high and move fast.

The smart money says he lands somewhere big. Liverpool is the most interesting option right now because they made the first real contact, but nothing is done yet. Fernandes will want to sort his future quickly so he can focus on playing. Where he ends up will say a lot about how the rest of the summer window shakes out.
