Liverpool Lock In Szoboszlai After Player of the Season Run

Liverpool and Dominik Szoboszlai have agreed in principle on a new contract according to journalist Ben Jacobs. The deal isn’t signed yet but terms are set. That’s the short version.

Here’s the bigger picture. The Hungarian midfielder just won Liverpool’s Player of the Season award for 2025/26. He took home Player of the Month honors five times. He played 57 games across all competitions. Scored 13 goals. Piled up a team-high 12 assists. And four of those goals were direct free kicks in the Premier League which is the most by a Liverpool player in a single season and just one shy of the league record.

Liverpool really needs this to go through. They lost Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate on free transfers in the last 12 months. That stung. The club can’t afford another high-profile exit especially when Szoboszlai’s current deal runs through 2028. They’re locking him down early to avoid that whole mess again.

A Versatile Weapon for Slot

Szoboszlai lined up as both a midfielder and a right-back this season. That flexibility mattered. He started 29 league games during Liverpool’s 2024/25 title run and was a key part of that championship squad.

He joined from RB Leipzig in 2023 and it didn’t take him long to become indispensable. His work rate and creativity stand out but it’s his leadership that’s been getting attention lately. With Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson gone there’s a leadership void. Szoboszlai is one of the candidates for the vacant vice-captain role alongside Alisson Becker.

Not bad for a guy who’s still only 25.

What’s Next

Szoboszlai is scheduled to fly with the squad to the United States on Monday for Liverpool’s preseason tour. That’s a normal enough detail except it tells you the club expects this deal to be buttoned up before then or at least close enough that it won’t be a distraction.

The new contract will likely keep him at Anfield well beyond 2028. And honestly watching him play this season it’s hard to imagine Liverpool building around anyone else right now. He’s that guy.
