English football’s nastiest rivalry is about to get a whole lot more personal. Manchester United have reportedly made inquiries about Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, according to The Athletic. And here’s the twist: his older brother Lukas currently plays for Leeds United.

The younger Nmecha, 25, just finished a 42-appearance season for Dortmund and signed a contract extension all the way through 2030 back in March. But United are sniffing around, and if a deal happens, you’d have two brothers suddenly lining up on opposite sides of one of the most intense derbies in the sport.

The brothers’ weirdly intertwined career path

Both Nmechas came up through Manchester City’s academy. Both moved to Wolfsburg in 2021. Then Felix took the next step to Dortmund in 2023 while Lukas stayed in Germany before joining Leeds on a free transfer last summer.

They’ve actually faced each other twice in the Bundesliga already. Felix and Dortmund won both times. But those were just regular league games. A Manchester United versus Leeds derby? That’s different heat entirely.

Lukas had a quietly strong first season at Elland Road. He bagged six Premier League goals, part of a free-agent strike duo with Dominic Calvert-Lewin that combined for 20 goals total. Not bad for two guys who cost nothing in transfer fees.

World Cup run ended early

Felix started every match for Germany at this summer’s World Cup. He scored and assisted in that wild 7-1 demolition of Curacao, then added another assist in a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast. But Germany’s tournament ended this week in brutal fashion — knocked out by Paraguay in the round of 32 via a penalty shootout. That’s not the kind of exit that builds momentum heading into a club season.

Still, Dortmund clearly value Felix. That 2030 contract is a statement. But United need midfield reinforcements and the Nmecha camp has been linked to Premier League interest before. A source close to the situation told the Yorkshire Evening Post that United’s exploratory contact is real, though nothing close to an offer yet.

If it goes through, you’re looking at a genuine family derby. Brothers texting each other after matches, maybe avoiding holiday dinners for a while. The Premier League doesn’t get many sibling showdowns this raw.
